New Year, New Rebrand, New Direction

Over the past couple of years I have been in a state of flux, not knowing what direction to take my work, what was I, a Graphic Designer, Digital Designer, Front-End Web Designer... It turns out I'm all of these and more, what I have realised is that I'm no different than when I started out 18 years ago. I simply love image making and solving problems through design.

This un-certainty has been born out of pressure within the industry to become a specialist in one particular area such as Front-End design or Print design. I have read many articles and listened to lots of podcasts such as? and? I'm not alone in my dilemma.

It struck me over Christmas whilst taking a break that my roots lie in Graphic Design, by its very nature encompasses all these specialist areas. Through Graphic Design, we as Designers solve problems for clients through visual communication, using images, illustration, typography, colour, composition and now motion, gestures and interactivity.

With this in mind I felt the need to re-establish my identity, create a visual identity system I am happy with and that can be applied to various marketing channels. Even after 18 years I am still eager to learn, there's still so much I want to do in my career and this year is the year I will make inroads in achieving my goals.

The first decision I made was to rethink my logo. Truth is, I don't want to hide behind a logo, I want to be transparent to my clients because its me and my experience and skills prospective clients are buying. It also helps add personality and a friendliness to my brand.

The next stage was to think about my stationery. I wanted to make a bold statement and so continued the blue, aqua marine colour scheme throughout. I also took the opportunity to place a positioning statement on the reverse of all my stationery.


Next up was my website. I already had a foundation from which to work with, however it was a static website. I rebuilt the site within CMS Made Simple so that I could keep it up to date more often with blog posts and recent work. I also coded the site to be responsive, based on a 12 column grid system. I also rearranged my work into my core ares of expertise,?Digital,?Branding and?Print. This makes it easier for prospective clients to find examples of work. I also decided to display one page per area, removing the link through to a page for each piece. I know this limits SEO, however I believe prospective clients quickly browse websites and want quick references before making contact.
