Prototyping is a fundamental stage in the web design process. It allows you to explore user journeys and structure content.

There are plenty of tools and ways you can produce a wireframe but my personal favourite is Adobe XD. I have worked on countless complex website builds over the years and approached them in various ways when mapping out complex site structures.

The latest version of Adobe XD includes animated components and symbols which reduces the need for multiple art boards just to demonstrate a user triggered animation.

At the time of writing, Adobe XD is also free for one project so you can try it out without subscribing to an Adobe CC Account.

Sketch has been around for a while now and its fair to say its one of the most popular UI applications out there. Sketch was the first dedicated UI application I used and it was great and still is. It has a lot more functionality than Adobe XD but the application does have a steeper learning curve than Adobe XD.

My only thought on Sketch is that because it has plenty of features it can be overly complicated for the novice but stick with it and you will be designing UI’s in no time.

At the time of writing the cost for Sketch is around £75, which is not too bad considering what you get.

The above video shows an example of how Adobe XD can record a user flow, which can then be shared with your client. Its an ideal way to demonstrate to your client how certain UI elements work coupled with sharing a private link online so that your client can review the UI.

Whats great about Adobe XD is that once the prototype has been signed off Adobe XD provides the option to hand over the UI to a Developer as a Developer link. The Developer link provides a Developer with a style guide to all the elements of the design from hex codes and font styles to image styles to padding and margins.
